this must be user error of some sort . . . when i enter a simple pattern into the pattern editor:
<100 B 30 1 30 2 30 3 30 4 30 3 30 2 30 3>
and play it, it does not render the output accurately. meter is set at 7/8. i get an extra 2/8's worth of silence.
is it possible or not to have the patterns in the pattern editor 'reign supreme'? in other words, if i want:
voice 1 with a pattern of 7 eighth notes
voice 2 with a pattern of 15 32nds
voice 3 with a pattern of 5 quintuplets over a half note
voice 4 with a pattern using 6 half notes
can i do it, without tempo workarounds of any sort?

Triplets are 20 time units, semiquavers are 30 units; therefore, did you actually mean to use this...?

so what i'm asking here is if i can do (and i'll psot just rhythmic values for the sake of simplicity:
voice 1 = <100 R 30 30 30 30 30 30 30> (yes, this is technically workable by choosing 7/8, but doesnt seem to work, even with choosing 7/8. i seem to get an extra 2 eighths)
voice 2 = <100 R 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5> (dont even know how to notate 32nds)
voice 3 = <100 R 24 24 24 24 24> (no extant preset for this)
voice 4 = <100 R 120 120 120 120 120 120> (no extant preset for this either in this context)
this is an overstated example, but . . . i don't really want to play with tempos and values to accomplish this. and, i need to know mostly if these patterns that are developed in the pattern editor can 'drive' the output.
in a more ridiculous example, what if i wanted to set the voice patterns as follows (pick a base value, doesn't matter):
voice 1 = <100 R 20 20 20 20 20 20>
voice 2 = <100 R 21 21 21 21 21 21>
voice 3 = <100 R 22 22 22 22 22 22>
voice 4 = <100 R 23 23 23 23 23 23>
the above are very close, and can of course be farther apart, but if you play them long enough, they do come in and out of phase, which is a nice effect. a more practical example which have used a lot in the past with 'click tracks' and real people playing is to take what i call 'harmonic tempo relationships', which in a practical real world performance context can take a lot of the complexity out of notation and performance, such as:
voice 1 = <100 R 60 60 60 60> ('base' tempo of quarter note = 60)
voice 2 = <100 R 80 80 80> (triplet values over a whole note's duration)
voice 3 = <100 R 48 48 48 48 48> (quintuplet values over a whole note's duration)
voice 4 = <100 R 34 34 34 34 34 34 34> (7 over a whole note value, not actually a whole number)
i can't get these kinds of values to perform consistently and 'drive' the output. the meter tab doesn't really mean anything in this context . . .

I noticed strangeness in odd time signatures as well, and not just when using patterns. I was playing around with a 9/8 time signature and noticed that when the piece restarts there are a few extra beats of silence (rests) before the notes are triggered. I made sure that %rest was set to zero, and I tried setting the piece length to 1 and 2 just so that it would cycle through 9 eighth notes and repeat, but always a few extra beats of silence.

I think it's the piece length parameter that is confusing me. It measures the length in time units instead of measures. Makes it almost impossible to get a repeating pattern to sync to a time signature.

Yes, this is definitely something that we hope to extend for Noatikl 2. Others (including LoopyC) have also requested piece length to be definable in terms of time units...
