Recording audio from Mixtikl AU in Logic

Postby Umcorps » Mon Mar 19, 2012 7:32 am

Been having a private chat with a forum member about how to record audio from Mixtikl AU directly inside Logic. As the answer isn't the most obvious thing to do I thought it would help to post the info here as well.

The problem - Mixtikl AU has to go on an Instrument type track in Logic. Instrument tracks don't record audio.

The answer - Take the Bus.

1) Create a software instrument track for Mixtikl AU. Set the output on the channel strip to a spare bus (eg Bus 10)

2) In the mixer view, find the channel strip for Bus 10 and set the output to "No output"

3) Create a stereo audio track. Tick the "input monitoring" option when doing this. Set the input on the channel strip to Bus 10

4) Activate the input monitoring button on the channel strip

All the audio from Mixtikl AU is now being routed through to the new stereo audio track you just made which is fully recordable.

I've made a little example file of this setup which you can get HERE

If you just want Mixtikl to be part of a wider mix recording, its output will be recorded as part of a realtime, digital bounce anyway without needing to reroute the audio like this. But if you want to record Mixtikl on its own, or if you want to use Logic's own plug-ins as master effects on a Mixtikl mix, then this is the way to go.
