Wotja / Wotja X 5.2.8 (iOS/macOS)

Post by imtim » Sat Feb 24, 2018 11:34 am

This is a bug fix update for all iOS/macOS versions of Wotja / Wotja X (and Wotja X for macOS is finally released!). It also sees the retiring of the XT tiers in Wotja subscription versions (see below).

UPDATED APPS:
------------
- Wotja 2018 (iOS) 5.2.8
- Wotja (iOS) 5.2.8
- Wotja X (iOS) 5.2.8
- Wotja 2018 (macOS) 5.2.8
- Wotja (macOS) 5.2.8
- Wotja X (macOS) 5.2.8 [at last!]

WHAT'S NEW:
------------
Wotja 2018 iOS/macOS:
- Fixed issue with Albums/Playlists not sequencing correctly and mix countdown timer not updating.
- Randomization defaults in 'Settings' have been changed to better support automatic album creation on lower power devices (it is easy to change these to suit your purposes); Blank Cells setting now 35% and Tracks now 2.
- Fixed an issue when stopping a Mixdown Recording [iOS].
- Other minor bug fixes.
- See also: Long Play Music below...

Wotja iOS/macOS [subscription version]:
- As above fixes plus...
- In this update the 'Unlocked' In-App Subscription tier Music Play Time Timeout has been increased massively, from 1 hour to 8 hours (i.e. to the same value as was in the XT1 tier). Enjoy Wotja for longer and for less!
- The 6 month auto-renewing XT In-App Subscription tiers that were available to extend the Music Play Time Timeout for long play music requirements have now been removed from sale (see instead Long Play Music below). When an auto-renewing In-App Subscription is removed from sale it simply means that it can no longer be purchased and the pre-existing subscription will not auto-renew. An active XT In-App Subscription will therefore continue to work just as it does now until that subscription expires. At the time of subscription expiration should you wish to continue using Wotja without Free Mode Limitations then you can either subscribe to the 'Unlocked' tier or purchase the paid for annual version (Wotja 2018). If you have a requirement for very long play music (i.e. > 8 hours) then see below.
- Long Play Music: For those that need very long play times for their Wotja files (.wotja, .wotjabox), e.g. for installations, we have released a new app, 'Wotja X'. With its range of auto-renewing (but easy to cancel) weekly 'Long Play' In-App Subscription tiers 'Wotja X' allows its Music Play Time Timeout to be disabled whilst the tier is active. NB: It is easy to open your Wotja files in 'Wotja X' as both 'Wotja' and 'Wotja X' share the same iCloud folder. Tip: If you want to long play .noatikl and .mixtikl files then for the moment use 'Wotja' to add them to a Wotja playlist file (.wotjalist) and then export that to a .wotjabox file for playing in 'Wotja X'.
- Other minor bug fixes.

Wotja X iOS/macOS [subscription version]:
- Minor bug fixes

This is all very cool – especially what seems to be the option of >1 week playtime! Always exciting to have a new version of the feature set; I like the choices in Wotja X and look forward to seeing how it develops. I take it the idea is that users on Wotja 5 switch to Wotja X when our current subs run out, and those on Wotja 18 in January unless we need (or want the possibility of) >8 hours' playtime. I don't know if this is part of the plan, but the new model seems to make space for a free Wotja player app with 1 hour MPT, which is something I've rather missed under the current model; it would be good to have a way to distribute compositions to non-customers in a way that will allow them to play them for more than 3 minutes.

In case it's of any use to know, this update fixed a weird problem I was having with album generation in the previous update of Wotja (but not Wotja 2018) on iOS 9.3.3 (but not higher); it would crash the app, but if I created an album from the same templates in Wotja 2018 it would play fine back in Wotja 5. I was going to test it further before reporting, but it's gone now, so something you just did quietly fixed it.

Yes, you are correct, and thanks!

Thank you! Now that we have versions of Wotja X available for all platforms (and that was HARD) we will be able to start chipping away to add in editing and features as quickly as we can go. You can only start a 1000 mile journey with the first step :). Actually, we started preparing the groundwork for this journey a long time ago as we had to prepare our engines.

One of the reasons it has been a longstanding ambition of ours to develop a true cross-platform "Generative Music Creation and Player System" was for the creators working with our engines. With Wotja X then no matter what platform you create on (iOS/macOS/Android/Windows) there will be a route for your compositions to be heard on the other platforms we support (more below).

Yes, and we have done this way for many reasons. On the Music Play Time side of things, we wanted to find an easy way to allow the Music Play Time Timeout to be disabled for those that really wanted that. And, we also wanted to find a really low cost way people who wanted that could try it out and experiment with it. Our first attempt at this was the 6 month XT Tiers but the issue with them were that they allowed a maximum of 1 week and also required a 6 month commitment. As we knew we were wanting to run with a cross-platform app approach (Wotja X) there was no point in adding these tiers to Wotja partly because it would have been confusing, and partly because the transition to Wotja X has to happen at some point. As these are specialist "play" tiers and Wotja X can play the same files as Wotja and shares the same iCloud folder, it made sense to add them just to Wotja X. And, now these are available in Wotja X there was no need to keep the old XT tiers available for sale in Wotja (they will still work though right until the subscription expires).

On the features side of things, Wotja X will not be feature equivalent to Wotja for a long time yet (it already has support for AudioBus / iCloud etc. though). Once it is, we will want people to transition to it - but at the right time for them. Wotja 2018 will continue to be feature updated in tandem with Wotja/Wotja X throughout 2018 (and there is a fun new feature coming in a few weeks). We *hope* that during 2018 we will be able to complete the work needed to bring Wotja X to some kind of feature equivalence so that Jan 1st 2019 the new annual version of Wotja will in effect be Wotja X 2019. However, at that time we might then also drop the X as that will then be Wotja moving forwards. We know it is a bit complex to get one's head around, but we are trying to make this cross-platform transition as smooth and simple as we can for users.

It is an interesting idea, and we had considered something like that but it would be a 'wafer thin mint' in that the considerable extra time needed to do it / test it / update it / maintain it would impact all our other work and thus actually be to the detriment of creators who want features/capabilities. And, if it was free, there would be nothing to offset that work, either.

That said, we think we have it sufficiently covered in our new model where not all versions are yet released :). It is not that everything always *has* to be free, it is more that it helps if it *somewhat feels like free*.

NB: It is always worth remembering that it is easy to make a very long recording and share that via Youtube etc. That is the usual way to get your content into the hands of listeners for free :).

In Wotja X for iOS/macOS someone can *for free* hear for 3 minutes a live mix that you share/publish (let us know if you want us to tweet/post about anything you have like that).

If they want to hear your composition playing live for a lot longer they can get a $0.5/week "Long Play: Personal" auto-renewing (but easy to cancel) In-App Subscription.

If they want to create as well, but play for up to 8 hours, they could instead get a $1/month (iOS) or $2/month macOS "Unlocked" auto-renewing (but easy to cancel) In-App Subscription. They could also then get a Long Play tier if they wanted.

Note that Features (e.g. Unlocked) and Long Play (e.g. Personal/Biz 1) subscription groups are independent and are for different things.

In all the above cases the entry point is now very low cost and is easy to dip in and out of. It works for iOS/macOS because we have free/subscription versions. We don't yet have those for Windows/Android (they are annual versions, excepting that the Google Play version is free but locked in Free Mode). We hope to release them in due course.... but it might take a while...

Without making everything for free (which we simply cannot afford to do) we cannot see right now how we could do any more. Having taken these steps we now hope that creators can start sharing more of what they create! That is what will help to build momentum in the ecosystem.

Thanks for letting us know that! Yes, sometimes things get fixed as we go. :) Our aim is to have as few bugs as possible... Having a cross-platform approach in Wotja X should also help in that, too.

Thanks again for your feedback Nick,
